Conversation guide
Name the item, then give the amount
At a produce stand, you may be asked what you want before the seller asks how much. If the items are sold individually, give a number. If they’re priced by weight, give the amount and the unit together. You can point to the display if there are several varieties, then say the name or color aloud.
Check what the price refers to
A price might be per item, per unit of weight, or the total for everything you’ve chosen. Listen for words like “each” and “a pound,” and ask whether the price is the total if you’re unsure. When the seller asks how you’re paying, choose the method you intend to use.
Switch from a count to a weight
Try asking for three pears. Then imagine buying grapes that are sold by weight. Use the same opening, but change the way you give the amount.
