Conversation guide
Explain the reason in one sentence
At the returns counter, first say which item you’re bringing back and why. Keep the reason factual, such as a fit problem or damage you noticed after buying it. If you have the receipt or order confirmation, keep it handy so you can show it when the employee asks.
Choose the outcome you want
An exchange means you take a replacement item, such as another size. A refund means you get money back, subject to the store’s policy. Store credit is a third possibility, so ask where the money will go if the employee’s explanation is unclear. Listen for these options before choosing your reply.
Practice a different return
Imagine you want to exchange a jacket for another size. Say why you brought it back, then state the outcome you want. If the store doesn’t have that size, practice asking what options are available.
